BENVENUTO BRUNELLO 2016 Celebrating the 5 star vintage of 2015 and 50 years since Brunello first obtained is DOC status

This year there were plenty of things to be excited about at Benvenuto Brunello, from the celebration of the 5 star vintage of 2015, to 50 years since Brunello first obtained its DOC status, to the debut of the 2011 Brunello vintage and of course, the 2010 Riserva, anxiously awaited after the incredible success of the 2010 Brunello vintage at a world wide level. Last year 2010 (and subsequently 2009) literally flew off the shelves worldwide -and out of the cellars in Montalcino. This caused a 20% increase already in bottling in Montalcino this December as compared to the year before. And land values are ever increasing in the Montalcino wine territory – reaching almost 500.000 Euro per hectare. Export abroad is still growing, and expected to reach around 70% this year (last year this figure was around 67,5%). The biggest market for Brunello di Montalcino is the US, accounting for over 30% of exports, followed by Europe, with Germany, Switzerland and the UK leading the way at around 20%, followed by Asia (China, Hong Kong, Japan etc.) that make up for around 15% of total export sales, then Canada follows accounting for about 12%, then Central and South America with around 8% total sales, with the last 15% made up of other markets world wide. Even Montalcino is experiencing a tourist boom thanks to the incredible success of Brunello on the worldwide level. Last year tourism was up almost 20% compared to previous years. The 2011 Brunello vintage received a 4 star rating and is offering wines which are excellent choices for the restaurant industry, showing the racy acidity, structure and balance which are all hallmarks of great Sangiovese based wines, and permit them to be ageworthy. The 2010 Riserva are truly some of the most exceptional wines to have come out of Montalcino in recent history, of great quality, complexity and ability for aging – in some cases, they may be enjoyed for 20 + years. Some of our personal favorites here at Wine Qualia include the following wines, as tasted at Benvenuto Brunello 2016: · Brunello di Montalcino Riserva 2010 Podere Le Ripi · Brunello di Montalcino Riserva 2010 Poggio di Sotto · Brunello di Montalcino Riserva 2010 Sesti “Phenomena” · Brunello di Montalcino 2011 La Fiorita · Brunello di Montalcino 2011 Salvioni · Brunello di Montalcino 2011 Collemattoni · Rosso di Montalcino 2011 Podere Le Ripi · Rosso di Montalcino 2013 Poggio di Sotto · Cupano Sant’Antimo “Ombrone” 2013
